Turned parts are workpieces produced through the machining process of turning. During the turning process, a workpiece is rotated using a lathe and shaped into the desired form using tools. Turned parts are used in numerous industries, such as mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, medical technology and the sanitary industry. Examples for turned parts include nuts, spindles, nipples, and housings, as well as valve assemblies made from several turned parts.

CNC automatic lathes or cam-controlled lathes are mainly used for the production of turned parts.

You will find an overview of all types of turned parts that are frequently used in an industrial context below.

Turned Parts in All Variants

The most important turned parts in all variants are described below.

  • Precision Turned Parts

Precision turned parts are turned parts with complex geometries and small diameters that are primarily used in control and measurement technology as well as in medical technology. Flühs manufactures complex turned parts in a single machining process on flexible turning centers.

  • Long Turned Parts

Long turned parts are rotationally symmetrical, narrow turned parts with a ratio of length to diameter of at least 3:1, for example shafts or valve rods. Flühs uses special CNC Swiss type automatic lathes to manufacture long turned parts.

  • CNC Turned Parts

CNC turned parts are rotationally symmetrical components manufactured automatically on special CNC automatic lathes, which are usually produced in large quantities (such as union nuts, screws, valve components). Flühs uses state-of-the-art CNC lathes on a daily basis to produce high-precision turned parts in small, medium and large series.

  • Complex Turned Parts

Complex turned parts are turned parts that are characterized by complicated shapes and tight tolerances, such as turbine shafts in the aerospace industry. Flühs manufactures complex turned parts in a single machining process.

  • Diamond Turned Parts

Diamond turned parts are turned parts that are produced by diamond turning and are mainly used in precision mechanics, aerospace and the automotive industry. Flühs has optimized the diamond turning process so that shape accuracies within 0.01 mm and a surface quality of Ra 0.2 µm can be achieved.

  • Brass Turned Parts

Brass turned parts are turned parts made from copper-zinc alloys, which are used, for example, to manufacture head pieces and spindles for valve components and other sanitary technology components. Flühs specializes in a variety of brass alloys and uses this durable material as the basis for many products.

  • Stainless Steel Turned Parts

Stainless steel turned parts are turned parts made of stainless steel that are used in the automotive industry as shafts or axles, for example, or in medical technology as implants or surgical instruments. Flühs mainly uses 1.4404  stainless steel for sanitary technology components for valves in special areas of application (like water filters and osmosis systems) and is active as a contract manufacturer for stainless steel turned parts in various industries.

More about Stainless Steel Turned Parts

  • Copper Turned Parts

Copper turned parts are turned parts with high corrosion resistance, conductivity and density, which is why they are often used in sanitary and electrical applications. Flühs uses various copper alloys with a copper content of >90% with and without lead content, which are used in valve technology.

    More about Copper Turned Parts

  • Plastic Turned Parts

Plastic turned parts are turned parts made of POM (polyoxymethylene), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) PEEK (polyether ketone) or PA (polyamide), which are mostly used as sheathing, bearings, plugs or similar.

    More about Plastic Turned Parts

  • Titanium Turned Parts

Titanium turned parts are turned parts with high strength, corrosion resistance and low density, which are challenging to machine and are primarily used in medical technology. Flühs specializes above all in the sanitary industry, where the processing of titanium does not occur.

  • Aluminum Turned Parts

Aluminum turned parts are turned parts that are very light, corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic. They are mainly used in mechanical and plant engineering.

Turned Parts with Surface Coating

Flühs offers turned parts with surface treatment using a variety of processes. Surface treatment is a machining process that improves the aesthetic or functional properties of a material's surface. For example, it can optimize corrosion protection, wear resistance, or electrical conductivity. Other objectives of surface treatment are improved sliding and friction properties and the visual enhancement of the workpiece.

The following list describes the various processes for surface treatment of turned parts that are used at Flühs.

  • Turned parts with surface treatment by electroplating

The turned part is coated with a metal layer during electroplating, which makes the turned part more resistant to corrosion. Common applications of electroplating are chrome plating, nickel plating, silver plating and gold plating.

    More about electroplating

  • Turned parts with surface treatment using mechanical processes

Mechanical processes for surface treatment include grinding, polishing, brushing and diamond coating, whereby the surface quality is aesthetically improved.

  • Turned parts with surface treatment by thermal processes

Thermal processes for surface treatment include annealing, hardening and nitriding, which primarily improve the wear resistance of the turned parts.

  • Turned parts with surface treatment using chemical processes

Chemical processes for optimizing the surface quality include pickling, passivation and burnishing and PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), all of which improve the corrosion resistance of the turned part.

  • Turned parts with surface treatment by coating

Powder coating, painting and anodizing are surface treatment processes that improve the visual appearance of the turned parts.
