CNC turned parts are turned parts that are manufactured using an automated production process with computer-controlled automatic lathes. They are mainly used in mechanical engineering, control technology, medical technology and in the automotive and aerospace industries.

The manufacturing process for CNC turned parts comprises 5 work steps, consisting of material selection, workpiece assembly, tool selection, programming of the CNC lathe and finally the machining process. The largely fully automated manufacturing process allows for high quality even with large quantities.

The various types of turned parts and the finely tuned manufacturing process, which allows us to produce approximately 1 million turned parts per day in our production facility, are described below.

CNC Turned Parts

Short Turned Parts

Short turned parts are turned parts with a ratio between length and diameter of almost 1:1 and a maximum length of 70 mm. Widely used short turned parts are, for example, special screws, hollow screws and seals for sanitary technology and the sanitary industry. Short turned parts are manufactured at Flühs on mechanical lathes or CNC automatic lathes.

Long Turned Parts

Long turned parts are rotationally symmetrical, narrow turned parts whose ratio of length to diameter is at least 3:1 and which are at least 70 mm long. Frequently used long turned parts include shafts or rods. Flühs uses special CNC sliding headstock automatic lathes to manufacture long turned parts.

Automatic Turned Parts

Automatic turned parts are precision turned parts that are manufactured on CNC automatic lathes or lathes with cam control, for example special connecting elements or coupling nuts, nipples and special screws in large quantities in series production. Flühs is able to economically produce turned parts of any size in any quantity on automatic lathes.

Customized Turned Parts

Customized turned parts are tailor-made turned parts that require high precision for small to large order quantities. Thanks to CNC-controlled multi-spindle and single-spindle automatic lathes, production at Flühs enables flexible manufacturing that meets the most demanding customer requirements.

Precision Turned Parts

Precision turned parts are turned parts with complex geometries and small diameters (0.1 to 42 mm), which are primarily used in control and measurement technology as well as in medical technology. Flühs manufactures complex turned parts in a single machining process on flexible turning centers.

How are CNC turned parts manufactured?

CNC turned parts are manufactured by automatically clamping the workpiece in the automatic lathe, setting it in rotation and then shaping it with pre-programmed tools (such as drilling, milling, cutting tools and forming tools).

CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) is generally a control technology for the automated production of rotationally symmetrical components. With CNC turning, the most complex shapes and geometries can be achieved with tight tolerances. Flühs also enables the production of non-rotationally symmetrical CNC turned parts in a single work step using state-of-the-art automatic lathes.

Before the CNC turned part is physically manufactured, it is designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. A CNC code is generated from the CAD data. This contains the most important information about the workpiece, such as the geometry of the tools to be used, feed rates and speeds. The machine uses the CNC code to produce the respective turned part. The loading of the lathe, the production process itself and quality control are largely automated.

Turning is a very old industrial process in machining technology. It involves removing chips from the workpiece to give it the desired shape. During this process, the workpiece rotates around its own axis at a speed of approx. 3500 revolutions per minute. The manufacturing process for CNC turned parts essentially consists of 5 steps:

  1. Selection of the material

Before production, the alloy to be used and the dimensions or length of the workpiece for further processing are determined.

  2. Clamping the workpiece

The pre-formed workpiece is fixed in the automatic lathe. Loading is automated via the loading magazine.

  3. Tool selection

Which tools are selected depends on the material, the desired shape, surface finish and the dimensions of the turned part. Typical tools are, for example, drills, grooving tools or forming tools.

  4. Programming the CNC machine

The CNC lathe is programmed with specific instructions, such as tool paths, cutting speed, feed rate, etc., to achieve the desired shape with the correct dimensions of the workpiece.

  5. Machining process

After programming, the CNC lathe machines the surface of the workpiece with the selected tools. This removes as much material as necessary until the desired shape is achieved.

Comprehensive quality control takes place before, during and after the production process. As early as when the lathe is equipped, 5-10 pre-series items are produced, which are checked by a responsible machine operator using measuring equipment designed for this purpose. In addition, our trained quality assurance team checks the pre-series items in the measuring room using special equipment for measuring surface accuracy and checking coordinates. The production process only begins once quality assurance has given its approval. During the manufacturing process itself, the machine operator and the quality assurance team carry out a permanent, in-process check. After the machining process, a fully automated quality control is carried out using image processing machines and high-speed cameras.

The high precision and efficiency of the manufacturing process for CNC turned parts enables consistent quality at high quantities and is therefore suitable for extremely demanding product requirements. In addition to large quantities, it is also possible to manufacture small and medium series individually.

Individual CNC Turned Parts
in Small, Medium and Large Series

Modern CNC technology enables the economical production of individual CNC turned parts in small, medium and large series.

From individual items to large-scale series production: Flühs Drehtechnik manufactures turned parts in any quantity while maintaining the highest quality.

In the area of contract manufacturing of CNC turned parts or assemblies, our customers generally provide us with their own CAD models and technical drawings. They decide on a specific quantity and, if necessary, inform us of a delivery deadline. We read out the CAD data provided and send a corresponding quotation stating the expected price and possible delivery date for the desired CNC turned parts.

In the field of valve technology, we draw on our own product portfolio. This means that we produce the CAD models and drawings for the requested valves ourselves.

As an additional service, we at Flühs offer several surface finishes for turned parts in small, medium and large series, which improve the quality of the turned parts. These include precision turning or diamond turning, for example. For surface treatments such as electroplating, polishing or grinding, we work together with external service providers.

Of course, we at Flühs will be happy to advise you throughout the entire process.
