Valve technology is the design and application of valves for shutting off, throttling, and distributing liquids and gases in plumbing, heating, and air‑conditioning systems (HVAC) and in heat and refrigeration technology. Flühs Drehtechnik was founded in 1926, a century ago, and expanded its specialization into valve technology in the 1970s.
We are a reliable, innovative manufacturer of valve technology for plumbing fixtures and building services, serving companies around the world. We offer a broad and versatile range of solutions in valve technology, which we continuously refine in close collaboration with our customers.
Below you’ll find brief descriptions of the most fundamental valve types as well as an overview of Flühs valve model series.

Some of the most important valve types include radiator valves, air vent valves, shut‑off valves, thermostatic valves, ceramic disc valves, and mixing valves. The following sections introduce the key types of valves.
Heating valves regulate heating-water flow and temperature in heating systems. Flühs supplies specialized turned parts that integrate into heating valves to enable precise temperature control.
Air vent valves are used to release trapped air or discharge excess water from pipelines, tanks, or other vessels. Flühs valves support efficient water circulation and help prevent unwanted pressure fluctuations in piping systems.
A shut‑off valve (also called a stop or isolation valve) regulates flow in gas or water lines in residential and industrial buildings. The wide Flühs portfolio in valve technology includes numerous valves with an integrated shut‑off function and offers a configurable shut‑off valve solution for isolating main and branch service lines.
A thermostatic valve in sanitary installations controls hot‑ and cold‑water flow to a pre‑set outlet temperature. A special wax element expands when the set temperature is exceeded (and contracts when it drops below), causing the valve to open or close and keeping the mixed‑water temperature constant. Across all sizes, Flühs thermostatic valves use premium components made from special brass. Combined with our patented differential drive, they deliver very fast response times and stable water temperature. In comparative testing against like‑for‑like competitors, our S18 Thermostar valve achieved the fastest response time.
Plumbing valves for sanitary applications regulate and control flow, examples include ball valves, shut‑off valves, diaphragm valves, bellows‑sealed valves, and plug valves. Flühs valve technology for controlling water flow in sanitary systems is a worldwide market leader and currently comprises roughly 1,400 active valve assemblies.
Water valves are manual or electric valves used to regulate water flow and maintain pressure in water‑supply systems, for example, in potable‑water installations or irrigation systems. Flühs valves are used primarily in the plumbing industry for shower, lavatory, or kitchen fixtures.
A valve for 3‑hole fittings provides shut‑off and flow control for fittings with 2 separate controls and one spout (e.g., a cold‑water tap and a hot‑water tap). Flühs offers complete, high‑performance solutions with Unit and Drop‑in valves that are easy to install.
Mixing valves blend cold and hot water to a certain temperature and typically have two inlets and one outlet. Examples include the Flühs Mix valve and the Flühs Promix valve. In addition to precise flow and temperature control, Promix can optionally provide an energy‑saving cold‑start function.
Ball valves are a type of shut‑off valve in which a rotating ball regulates the flow of water or gas. They are used in heating and plumbing systems and across many industries. While the Flühs Shut‑Off valve is not constructed as a ball valve, it enables comparably fast, effective control and positive shut‑off of flow.
A diaphragm valve uses a flexible diaphragm to regulate or shut off gases or liquids in industrial processes. Flühs focuses on drinking‑water valves that achieve control and shut‑off via cones or ceramic discs rather than diaphragms.
A bellows‑sealed valve offers high hermetic sealing to prevent leakage, typically used in industrial piping with hazardous media. Flühs valves are designed for potable‑water systems and employ elastic sealing discs (for example in the Classic valve) and, where applicable, o‑ring or lip seals (for example in the Lifetime valve) to ensure durability and tightness.
An in‑wall valve is a shut‑off valve commonly installed behind the wall or panels in residential and commercial buildings, with only the operator visible. The in‑wall version of the Flühs Shut‑Off valves can be adjusted via the spindle to the required wall thickness for precise on‑site alignment.
A check valve (also called a non‑return or backflow‑preventer valve) allows flow in only one direction and is often used in heating or cooling systems. Examples include the Flühs Classic RS and the KFR valve. A spring‑loaded sealing cone ensures the fitting is only traversed in the intended direction.
A free‑flow valve is a shut‑off fitting in potable‑water installations in which the valve disc moves completely out of the flow channel when opened, minimizing pressure loss. In Flühs Shut‑Off assemblies, for example, Classic or Lifetime headworks provide the shut‑off function, while a free‑flow path enables high‑capacity flow.
A KFR valve combines a free‑flow valve with an integrated check valve and is used in potable‑water installations, e.g., at the building’s water service entry. It prevents water from the private network from flowing back into the public water‑supply grid. The Flühs KFR valve uses sealing cones to stop backflow.
A diverter redirects water within a fitting to one of several outlets, for example, from the tub spout to a hand shower. The Flühs Motion valve uses ceramic discs to switch water across up to 3 ways and allows targeted flow control as well as shut‑off of the entire unit.
A plug valve is a type of shut‑off valve that uses a conical obturator instead of a ball. In Flühs valves, shut‑off is achieved via ceramic discs, a cone‑and‑seat combination, or custom solutions.

Below are all valve technology components that Flühs manufactures.
CLASSIC: Classic headwork with cone seal – proven quality in millions of units. With over 550 million units produced, the Classic headwork is one of our company's most successful valves. The water flow is controlled by a precise cone seal that moves axially and, in combination with the valve seat, reliably opens and closes the water flow.
LIFETIME: Lifetime headwork – world-leading technology with ceramic sealing discs. The Flühs Lifetime headwork stands for exceptional smoothness, durability, precise feel, and reliable sealing. Thanks to diamond-like hard ceramic sealing discs, this headwork achieves excellent functional reliability and an above-average life duration which makes it the global market leader among ceramic headworks.
KFR/free-flow valve: Solid valve technology for your domestic plumbing. Free-flow and KFR valves ensure reliable shut-off, high flow capacity, and maximum safety in drinking water installations. Thanks to their flow-optimized design and optional integrated backflow prevention (KFR), they offer optimum functionality with minimal pressure loss. Whether with a rising or non-rising stem, we supply the right solution for every installation situation.
MOTION: Multifunctional solution with ceramic disc technology. The Motion valve is a multifunctional diverter solution based on high-precision ceramic disc technology. It was specially developed for use in thermostatic fittings and enables the selection of premixed water to up to three separate water outlets – such as overhead shower, hand shower, and waterfall spout.
PROGRESSIV: Compact mixing valve with cold start function and precise control. Progressiv is a high-quality mixing valve with ceramic discs that has been specially developed for energy-saving single-lever fittings. Its integrated cold start function is a distinctive feature: when opened, only cold water flows initially, which effectively reduces unnecessary hot water consumption and also serves as protection against scalding – ideal for safety-relevant applications such as nurseries, schools, or care facilities.
BI-FLOW: Bi-Flow is a control unit with ceramic discs that allows two separate water ways to be regulated. It is used in kitchen fittings where it is necessary to be able to shut off filtered water in addition to cold and hot water.
MIX: Compact mixing solution without shut-off function. Mix is based on the technical concept of Progressiv, however, without an integrated shut-off function. It is used exclusively for mixing cold and hot water, so a separate unit is required for volume control and/or shut-off. This valve is particularly suitable for use in sensor fittings and is available in diameters of 22 mm, 25 mm, 29 mm, and 33 mm. The clear separation of the mixing and shut-off functions allows maximum flexibility in the design of modular fitting solutions.
THERMOSTAR: Precise temperature control with patented technology. The Thermostar family valves are high-precision thermostatic valves that ensure a constant mixed water temperature by compensating for pressure and temperature fluctuations in the cold and hot water supply. Automatic regulation keeps the preset temperature reliably at the desired level, ensuring high comfort, maximum safety, and energy efficiency. The valves are available in various cartridge sizes (S18, S22, and S25) and can be flexibly integrated into classic thermostatic fittings, modular systems, or shower panels.
PROMIX: Promix is a single-lever mixer with ceramic discs, which is characterized above all by its high ease of use, constant torque throughout its entire operating span, and durability thanks to its brass components. It can be used in a variety of ways in shower, sink, or kitchen fittings. Unlike standard plastic cartridges, Promix brass cartridges are capable of handling significantly higher torques.
BI-OPEN: Hygienically safe. Technically sophisticated. Failure-prone backflow preventers are a thing of the past: Bi-Open allows cold and hot water to be opened and closed simultaneously – with completely separate pipes in the valve body. Ideal for thermostatic fittings in public areas. Solid. Low maintenance. Future-proof.
PUSH2FLOW: Push2Flow controls water with a click: the first push starts the flow, the second push stops it. The axial operation replaces the classic rotary movement and creates a new, clear haptic experience for the end user. Lead-free brass, defined snap lock, hygienic and low-wear for sanitary, laboratory, and industrial applications.
BUBBLER: The Flühs Bubbler controls the water flow at the touch of a button – water only flows as long as the button is pressed. The axial operation ensures precise dosing, high hygiene, and easy handling. Ideal for drinking fountains, cemeteries, laboratories, medical, and public areas.
